2007-08: Travis Nelson will be one of several young frontcourt players who will challenge for increased playing time in 2007-08. Nelson has had two years in the Cowboy program to develop physically and adjust to the speed of the college game. A good low block player offensively, he will need to continue to improve defensively to provide the Cowboys with the inside presence they are looking for this season. 2006-07: Nelson played in 24 of Wyoming's 32 games his redshirt freshman season, and appeared in 13 of 16 conference contests. He averaged 1.7 points, 1.0 rebounds and 9.7 minutes per game in his first year competing for the Cowboys. Nelson scored four points in six different games for his season high. He also grabbed four rebounds on two different occasions for his best rebounding performances of the season. Against Lamar, Nelson blocked a career high four shots. He ranked No. 15 in the Mountain West Conference in blocked shots, averaging 0.58 per game. His one start of the season came at Air Force on Feb. 3. 2005-06: Nelson redshirted his freshman season at Wyoming. High School/Personal: Nelson earned Second Team All-State honors his senior season, while averaging 14.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. He led Linn-Mar High School to a 25-2 record and a No. 25 national ranking in the 2004-05 season. Linn-Mar lost only one regular-season game in Nelson's senior season, and advanced to its second consecutive Iowa 4A State Championship game -- 4A is the largest classification in the state of Iowa. Unfortunately, Linn-Mar was unable to defend its state title, losing to Bettendorf. Nelson shot 69.7 percent from the field his senior season, setting a school single-season record. He also set a school single-game record converting a perfect nine of nine field goals in one game. His junior season, he averaged 8.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game. His Linn-Mar squad posted a 24-3 record Nelson's junior season, and captured the Iowa 4A State Championship over Waterloo East. Nelson was named to the All-Tournament team at the state tournament as a junior, and was voted his team's Most Improved Player. His high school coach was Mark Hutchenson. Nelson was ranked as the number two prep prospect in Iowa by Iowa Preps.com behind Ross Marsden of Ames, Iowa, who committed to Iowa State. Nelson was invited and attended the Nike Hoop Jamboree in 2003, which brings together the top 125 high school players in the nation. He also was invited and attended the Nike All-America Camp in 2004. In the summer before his senior season of high school, he averaged a double-double for the Martin Brothers AAU team, coached by Hank Huddleson. The Martin Brothers Team won the 19 & Under National Championship in the summer of 2004, marking the first time an Iowa AAU team captured a national title. Nelson was named the state of Iowa 19 & Under AAU MVP in the summer of 2004. Former Wyoming Cowboys David Rottinghaus, Alex Dunn and James Ebert also played for the Martin Brothers team during their high school careers. Born May 13, 1987, he is the son of Belinda and David Nelson. He was also recruited by Creighton, Dayton, Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas State, Nebraska, Northern Iowa and St. John's. He is majoring in psychology. |
