UW This Season: Derek Armah had an outstanding spring practice in 2003. He is the returning starter at running back for the Cowboys. He enters his senior season with 1,507 career rushing yards, and needs only 321 more yards to move into the Career Top 10 in school history. 2002: Armah rushed for 596 yards on 124 carries as a junior, and scored six rushing touchdowns. He led the team in all three categories. The New Jersey native averaged a personal best 4.8 yards per carry. Among Mountain West Conference returnees, Armah is the sixth leading returning rusher from 2002, with an average of 54.2 yards per game in the 11 games he played last season. The best game of his career came against The Citadel as he ran for 181 yards on 29 carries. Armah ran for 63 yards versus Utah, and had 59 each against Colorado State and San Diego State. Ended the season second on the team in total offense with his 596 rushing yards, and had 728 all-purpose yards, including 132 yards receiving on 12 catches. He also scored three TDs receiving. 2001: Armah carried the ball 121 times in the 2001 season, more than any UW running back. He rushed for 396 net yards, second on the team to senior Nate Scott’s 550. Armah averaged 3.3 yards per carry, playing in all 11 of the Cowboys’ games. He scored four rushing touchdowns. Armah’s best games of his sophomore season were against: Texas A&M (53 yards), Kansas (61), Utah State (67) and Furman (72). He also caught five passes for 29 yards on the year. As a kickoff returner, Armah had one kickoff return for 15 yards. The New Jersey native ended the season with 396 yards of total offense, third on the team, and 440 all-purpose yards, good for sixth on the squad. 2000: Armah was the second leading rusher for Wyoming in 2000. He carried the ball 149 times for 515 net yards. Armah averaged 3.5 yards per carry. He also caught eight passes for 56 yards and was a perfect one for one in passing, completing a 53 yarder to Brock Ralph against Nevada. Armah concluded the season with 568 yards of total offense and 571 all-purpose yards. 1999: Actually signed with the Cowboys during the 1999 signing period, but did not attend college during the fall of '99. He was re-signed by UW during the 2000 signing period and enrolled at UW in the spring of 2000. High School: Was an outstanding quarterback at Haddon Heights High School in Lawnside, N.J. As a prep senior, he threw for 18 touchdowns and over 1,400 yards, and rushed for over 1,300 yards. His Haddon Heights team was 10-2 his senior year and advanced to the state championship game . He was a team captain both his junior and senior seasons for coach Al Mailahan. An All-State selection, he was one of the most versatile athletes in Haddon Heights school history. He played wide receiver as a freshman and sophomore, before moving to quarterback. He was a four-year starter at cornerback, while returning punts and kickoffs, and served as the team’s punter as a junior. Also lettered in track and baseball at Haddon Heights. Recruited by Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts and Vanderbilt. Personal: Born Jan. 23, 1980, in Camden, N.J. The son of Vida Armah, he is majoring in nursing. |
