UW This Season: Leonard Jones is a great athlete who has been moved to the defensive side of the ball for his senior season. Originally recruited as a wide receiver, Jones is expected to see a lot of action as a cornerback. He will also be counted on for kick returning duties.

2002: Jones was used in a variety of different ways for the Cowboys in 2002. Coming off a 2001 season in which he was Wyoming’s fifth leading receiver, he was moved to running back early in 2002 fall practice. Jones, who was a record-setting running back in high school at Montbello High in Denver, Colo., made a quick adjustment back to the running back position. He rushed for 206 yards on 49 carries for the season to rank third on the team. Three times during the 2002 campaign he accounted for over 40 yards rushing -- 48 against Boise State, 46 at Washington and 41 at Brigham Young. He was also UW’s top receiver out of the backfield, catching 15 passes for 136 yards on the season, including a touchdown reception against The Citadel. Jones was the Cowboys’ leading kick returner in 2002. He returned 28 kicks for 570 yards -- 20.4 yards per return. All three of those kickoff return numbers were team highs for the season. Jones was second on the squad in all-purpose yardage behind wide receiver Jovon Bouknight. Jones compiled 912 yards of all-purpose yardage for the season, an average of 76.0 yards per game. Four times during the season, he accounted for 100 or more yards in all-purpose yardage -- 115 versus Tennessee, 113 at Central Michigan, 112 at New Mexico and an even 100 yards at Washington. One of his biggest plays of the year came against archrival Colorado State when he recovered a blocked punt in the end zone for a Cowboy touchdown on CSU’s first possession of the game, sparking Wyoming to a 7-0 lead.

2001: Jones played in all 11 of Wyoming’s games, getting the starting nod six times. He was the Cowboys fifth leading receiver catching 23 passes for 221 yards. He had his best outing against Utah State catching six passes for 58 yards. Jones was the Cowboys top kick returner, returning 12 kicks for a total of 210 yards.

2000: Jones practiced with the Cowboys, but had to sit out of competition due to being a partial academic qualifier. High School: Jones was one of the most honored players in the state of Colorado his senior season at Montbello High School, earning All-State honors from both The Denver Post and The Denver Rocky Mountain News. He was also an All-Denver Prep League First Team selection. On Oct. 16, 1999, Jones set a Colorado state single-game record, rushing for 584 yards in one game in the snow against George Washington High School. He rushed for 2,164 yards in the 1999 season. He also returned seven punts, three for TDs, and totaled 330 yards in kick returns for the season. Jones led Montbello High to an 8-3 record as a senior and a second-place finish in the Denver Prep League. Coached in high school by former Denver Bronco Louis Wright. Also an outstanding track athlete, Jones has run a 10.6 100, a 21.8 200 and a 49.8 400. He was named an All-American in indoor track, anchoring the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 relay teams for Montbello High.

Personal: Born April 26, 1982, he is the son of Wilma Ross. Jones is majoring in administration of justice.
