Wyoming's Davis and Martinez Place at National Tournament

April 21, 2008

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

University of Wyoming freshman Tyler Davis and Olympic Redshirt Michael Martinez each placed recently at the University & Fila Cadet Nationals held in Akron, Ohio. The University & Fila Cadet Nationals are for collegiate wrestlers to compete in the Olympic wrestling styles.

Davis took seventh place in the Greco-Roman Tournament in the 70kg/154.25lbs division by defeating Greg Lewis of Clarion. Davis had a 16-7 record as a redshirt last season for the Cowboys and won the Utah Valley Open.

Martinez placed fourth in the Freestyle Tournament in the 55kg/121lbs division. He lost to Obenson Blanc of NYAC for third place. Martinez is currently training at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. in hopes of making the Summer Olympic Team. In 06-07, Martinez went 20-8 recording three major decisions, one technical fall and one pin. He will return to the Cowboys next season as a redshirt freshman.

"Its encouraging that these two guys would take the initiative to put themselves in a situation like this to compete in the University Nationals last week and for the U.S. Open this week," Suder said. "These are just deposits these two are making to be withdrawn in the future. Both of these guys have put in a tremendous amount of preparation to compete at these National tournaments and we are proud of them."
